“Our approach going into the weekend was that each game was like a playoff game," junior outfielder Chris Casey said. "We had to come out and bring our best level of play in order to show why we belong in the tournament. We had to prove this not only to the other teams in the conference, but to ourselves. We backed ourselves into a corner earlier in the season by losing some critical games, but this past weekend was a great opportunity to dig ourselves out."

After winning the indoor conference championship, the women’s track and field team has looked to continue their success and hold up to their 5th place national ranking this outdoor season. In order to give every runner an opportunity to race this past weekend, the team split up into three different, but competitive meets: the Stanford Invitational, the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, and Millersville Metrics in Pennsylvania. The Lady Jays competed against many top Division I teams and put up strong performances in each meet.

This past weekend, the Hopkins Women’s Tennis team visited Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on Oberlin, UC Santa Cruz, and 26th nationally ranked Case Western. The Blue Jays continued their undefeated season by handily defeating all three teams 8-1, 9-0, and 7-2 respectively, to maintain the top spot in the NCAA rankings. Many strong performances contributed to these wins, but no one stood out quite like Hailey Hogan, who won all six of her matches. She split her wins between singles and doubles matches, losing only one set combined in her singles matches and winning each of her doubles matches with a different partner. For her dominating performance this past week, the News-Letter is proud to present Hailey Hogan as the athlete of the week. She was kind enough to take the time to answer some questions about her matches this past weekend as well as the rest of the season.

The Hopkins men’s basketball team went into the Centennial Conference Tournament this weekend seeded third. It has been seven years since Hopkins last won the tournament, and they could only change that by beating the top two ranked teams, Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson. The Jays did just that, playing incredible defense against both teams and outperforming them down to the wire, beating F&M 50-48 and Dickinson 60-55. Many players on the team had strong performances during the tournament, but senior Connor McIntyre’s went unmatched. He put up double-digit points in both games and had 16 rebounds. For his dominating performance last week, The News-Letter is proud to announce Connor McIntyre as our Athlete of the Week.

Two weeks ago, the men’s and women’s swim teams capped off their dominant regular seasons with a win against Mary Washington. The women’s team finished with a 6-2 record, and the men ended with a 7-1 record. This past weekend, the teams went to Virginia Tech for one last meet before conferences begin. Hopkins was up against some tough D1 competition, but they were able to stay up front with the rest of the competition the way they had done all season.

The Hopkins wrestling team began their most important month of the season this past weekend with a dual meet split with two nationally ranked Centennial Conference opponents. The Blue Jays, who hosted the tri-match at Goldfarb Gymnasium, started their Saturday with a narrow victory over 29th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology 21-19. In their second match of the day against 20th ranked Ursinus College, Hopkins was not able to maintain its early lead over the Bears en route to a 24-6 defeat. At the end of the day, the dual split brought the Jays record to 7-4 overall and an impressive 4-1 in the Centennial Conference.

The Hopkins women’s track and field team went into this weekend’s race at Bucknell University ranked tenth in the nation. After their impressive performances this weekend, the team should only improve in the rankings. The Blue Jays had many top performances and now have runners in the top 10 in the conference in every track event from the 60-meter dash to the 5k. When asked how the team was able to be competitive in every event, sophomore Alex Popkin said it is due to their commitment and hard work.

While many of us were home relaxing over break, the Blue Jays women’s basketball team was dedicating hard work and time to stay sharp on the court. They had good reason for this as they went into the break with a 7-2 overall record and were undefeated against conference teams. Thanks to the team’s success before the break, players were motivated to stay in shape so they could continue their dominance with their return.

Last season the Hopkins women’s basketball team finished a 16-11 season after being eliminated in the conference semifinals. Despite losing many of their top players from last year the team is very confident in themselves this year. They were picked fourth in the preseason conference poll, but the team hopes to make it all the way to the NCAA tournament.

In September the men’s soccer team went through a difficult streak, losing five straight games and closing out the month with a 2-6-1 record. It did not look like things were going to get any easier for the Jays, since only one of their eight remaining opponents had a losing record. The team could have accepted a losing season, but instead with the help of the upperclassmen, came together to fix their season, according to sophomore forward Kenny DeStefano.
