The internet has become a crucial gateway for accessing information. Just look around Brody Café or wherever you’re reading this piece: People are writing papers, conducting research, reading articles, buying a new pair of shoes or watching TV, all through the internet. Whether it is education, business or entertainment, the internet has become a practical necessity for us to engage in society today. For our democracy and economy to function, it is paramount that people have equal access to the internet.

The Student-Labor Action Coalition (SLAC) protested on Feb. 3 and demanded a meeting with University President Ronald J. Daniels to discuss policies that would benefit Hopkins contract workers. But since then, attempts to arrange a meeting between SLAC and the administration have broken down.

The University placed Trent Bertrand, an adjunct professor in the Economics department, on paid leave Monday, Dec. 5, following complaints that he had created a “hostile environment” in the classroom. Bertrand, whose contract is renewed annually, has taught International Trade for the past six years.

Refuel Our Future, a student led fossil fuel divestment campaign at Hopkins, staged a peaceful protest and sit-in on Thursday, Nov. 17 outside Garland Hall. The group demanded that the University respond to their divestment proposal, which demands that the part of its endowment that is invested in fossil fuel companies be eliminated.

In preparation for Senator Bernie Sanders’ (D-VT) arrival at Hopkins on Nov. 17, the Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium (MSE) and the Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) announced that attendees must reserve the free tickets in advance. Students, faculty, staff and the general public will to be able to reserve tickets this Sunday Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.

This semester marks the beginning of the third year for the Ralph S. O’Connor Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Fund, a Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) program. Since its first cohort of recipients in 2014 and 2015, the fund has added more mentorship and infrastructural support for budding entrepreneurs.

At the end of last semester the University announced that covered grades, officially known as the first semester grading policy, will be discontinued in 2017. This prompted criticism from two dozen student groups, which formed a coalition named Re-Cover Hopkins to protest the change and the University’s lack of transparency in finalizing the decision.
