Following last week’s vigil, Johns Hopkins University Dissenters and Speak Out Now organized a walkout on Monday, Oct. 30 in solidarity with Palestine. The walkout voiced demands to the University administration and included speeches from Hopkins community members.
In response to heightening conflicts in the Middle East, the Office of Interdisciplinary Initiatives hosted a Johns Hopkins Briefing on developments in Gaza on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The briefing brought together Dean of the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) James B. Steinberg, Aronson Associate Professor Adria Lawrence, Aronson Assistant Professor Sarah Parkinson and Henry A. Kissinger Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs Hal Brands. The speakers discussed policy and humanitarian responses in the region.
The Student Government Association (SGA) convened for their weekly general body meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 10 to discuss the draft of the Climate Action and Sustainability Plan, the Major Fair, the Executive Liaison Program and the Cross-Campus Relations Initiative. SGA also presented and voted on various bills and confirmed a new treasurer for the Sophomore Class Programming Council.
President Ronald J. Daniels announced the new Johns Hopkins University School of Government and Policy (SGP) in a University-wide broadcast on Oct. 6. The school will be the first new academic division at Hopkins since 2007.
Why is it that we associate the season of fall with endings?
The University mourns the loss of Pava LaPere, co-founder and CEO of EcoMap Technologies and a 2019 graduate of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. LaPere made her home in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore after moving from Tucson, Arizona. A vigil was held in the neighborhood Wednesday night.
Search up Hopkins on any map and it will take you to the grassy knoll in front of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library that we Blue Jays lovingly call the Beach. On a sunny day, troves of students will flock there for picnics, a game of frisbee or some quiet reading. Nearby is the Daily Grind of Brody Learning Commons where students can purchase food and refreshments. And, if you want something more substantial, St. Paul Street has a plethora of restaurants for those sick of dining hall fare.
The 2023–2024 academic year has added new services for the student body. Hopkins Dining and Transportation Services announced changes to their operations that have elicited positive responses from students as well as constructive feedback.

Futurism at JHU runs a podcast discussing billion-dollar ideas in science and technology. Since the launch of the podcast in the fall of 2021, Futurism has recorded 24 episodes on topics from artificial intelligence and neural networks to digital healthcare and, most recently, ChatGPT.
The administration sent a broadcast email to the student body announcing a draft of the University’s second strategic framework, Ten for One, on April 14. The framework outlines 10 goals that the University hopes to achieve by 2030. The goals focus on building an inclusive, University-wide community on-campus; promoting excellence in students, faculty and staff; continuing to lead in research endeavours with real world impacts; and contributing to neighboring Baltimore communities.

Mist rolled over the marshy east bank of the Potomac River into the low-lying swampland that would become the neighborhood of Foggy Bottom. As an intern in Foggy Bottom this spring, I have the privilege of exploring one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington D.C.
As an Asian American student, I regularly hear my peers talk about the academic and career pressures they face at home and some of the resentment they feel toward how their parents raised them. I’ve come to think that the Asian parenting style has left us with more burdens than benefits, even though we did our best to fulfill our parents’ definition of success.
