When you think of the Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood campus, located in the heart of Baltimore, you know it as a pretty and composed campus that has easy access to the affluent Inner Harbor. It’s the living embodiment of the pictures that all of the welcome brochures contain, and as a giddy, 17-year-old incoming freshman, you really think that you’ll experience all that Baltimore has to offer. After all, you wanted a city school for a reason — it’s full of off-campus activities. You yearned for an urban environment, but many don’t realize all of the facets that come with a city in its entirety.

Bystander Intervention Training (BIT) trains students to better recognize and react to situations of gender violence and sexual assault on campus. The ultimate goal of BIT is to educate students in a host of preventative measures to end gender violence at Homewood. Currently, the training is mandatory for all varsity athletic teams and might eventually become accessible to all Hopkins students.

Tinder, defined by its official website as “a fun way to connect with new and interesting people around you,” has racked up quite a reputation these days. Known as a sort of a “hookup” app, Tinder is not quite percieved as intended. Originally intended to facilitate connections with mutual friends, Tinder is instead understood as a source of easy, no-strings-attached booty calls.

Caster Semenya should be known for her impressive running ability. What she is better known for is her gender ambiguity, a conflict that has affected her running career and her life in general. The South African has represented her country in track and field in various prestigious meets around the world, including the Olympics. Her participation in women’s track however has not gone without controversy, scrutiny and personal humiliation for the young athlete.

The Hopkins men’s tennis team earned the top seed in the Centennial Conference this past weekend, as the men notched victories against both Muhlenberg (9-0) and Mary Washington (9-0). The men subsequently improved their overall 15-2 record and their Centennial Conference undefeated record to 8-0. With only one regular season match remaining, the men hope to maintain their top seed.

The Hopkins women’s tennis team had an eventful past weekend, as the players competed both Saturday and Sunday.

“We have a lot of young talent and we are hungry,” sophomore men’s tennis player Erik Lim said. This hunger was evident during the teams past eventful weekend of play, as the Jays competed on both Saturday and Sunday against Swarthmore and Carnegie Mellon, respectively. Hopkins finished triumphantly in both contests due to various team and individual performances.

Hopkins wrestling took second Saturday, Feb. 23 with a total of 98 points at the 2013 Centennial Conference Championships. Ursinus College left Hopkins’s Goldfarb Gymnasium with the conference title for the tenth time in school history at 113 points, and McDaniel College claimed a third place finish with 48 points.
