Fashion is a language and, whether you shout at the world about who you are in bold red and leather jackets or whisper in a soft harmony of pastels and feminine silhouettes, you need to know the grammar. Or do you?

Everyone’s favorite f-word is having a moment of limelight and galore. Ideally, we would all celebrate by reading some Woolf, waving flags with “We can do it!” or “Votes for women!” feeling beautifully independent or independently beautiful, but there are some issues to tackle first.

The author of the poem “Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker” got it all wrong: any self-respecting dandy would agree that liquor trumps candy when it comes to dandiness — so does sartorial elegance, quick-witted banter and quoting “The Flowers of Evil,” probably.

It’s an ancient story of opposites: yin and yang, light and darkness, cheap and chic, communism and capitalism. Though seemingly direct opposites, they contain traces of each other and, if taken to the extreme, provoke the same reactions. Or do they?

Valentine’s Day rapidly approaches, dropping our standards for Tinder rights — or rather, increasing the frequency of jokes about cheap chocolate and dates with fictional characters.

Greek goddesses Hera and Athena offered the Trojan prince Paris power and glory, but he decided to give the golden apple with the inscription “for the most beautiful” to the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Why? She offered him the love of the prettiest woman in Greece, Helen. This, in turn, led to war, and the city of Troy famously went up in flames. Seems like too much ado about something so trivial: beauty.

In many ways, University President Ronald J. Daniels brings back monarchy to campus. We like to post statuses about seeing him dancing the twist or talking to the ghost of Johnny Hopkins — alright, alright, these rumors may be slightly exaggerated. We send Snapchats when he disregards his royal bloodline to dine with students, and we often assign to him the burden of responsibility for all University decisions.

There is something about fashion that can make people very nervous,” Anna Wintour says in the documentary The September Issue.

As an avid globe-trotter, I almost always require a change of scenery. Happiness is the date and time on a plane ticket to somewhere far away. Every new place is intoxicating — but then comes the hangover. I don’t buy silly little fridge magnets; I try to keep the cities bottled as atmospheres, moods and characters for my growing collection. Fancy a sniff?

It’s strange to think it was only freshman year of college when I finally, properly understood academic writing. Structure, message, evidence, etc. “Expository Writing” about Poe and I, haunted by his ghosts, tracing his steps all the way to graveyard, nodding to ravens, thinking that not to be stalked, seduced and entrapped by monsters may just mean not living at all.

"Ew, freshmen,” I say passing by Wolman — My RA friend Nebuchadnezzar’s heart shatters into billions of minuscule sharp-edged pieces.

I stumbled upon a quiz some time ago titled “Could You Prevent Someone Jumping from a Cliff?” After diligently filling out the answers, got the result: “No, you couldn’t.” The result wasn’t even that surprising, considering my overall grim outlook on life.

Dear Mum,

In my 19 years, I've learned a handful of lessons. I've found these to be the most important:

We all patiently waited for our acceptance letters to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when we were 11, only to get an acceptance letter to Johnny Hopkins University at the age of 17. While we have come to appreciate (and, for some of us, love) this Muggle-founded institution, let’s let our imaginations tame a Nimbus 2000 (or is this too old-fashioned of a broom model now?) and join the two acclaimed schools in a harmonious celebration of knowledge and chocolate frogs.

In my mind I told him he could have all my favorite songs and entangled thoughts. He could tell me about the most boring days or play with my hair if he wanted. I said I wanted his voice, his dreams, his stubbornness, his morning kisses (and midnight ones, too), his stories, his worries, his passion, his tenderness, heck, his anything at all.

Dear Hopkins,

Santorum has made a career out of his hateful ideas, especially toward the LGBT community. As a (former) Senator, he has been privileged to put his thought into policy on a national level, and the anti-LGBT policies of Santorum and his fellows have been measurably destructive for the lives of LGBT Americans.
