The Hopkins chapter of UNICEF (JHUNICEF) hosted a fundraising event for the UNICEF Tap Project last Friday, Apr. 6, on the Beach. Entitled "Water on the Beach," the event aimed to raise money to provide clean, safe drinking water to children in impoverished nations.

David M. Phillips, former Deputy Dean of Admissions for Strategic Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, has been appointed as the Vice Provost of Financial Aid and Admissions at Hopkins. As Vice Provost, Phillips will direct undergraduate recruitment, admissions and financial aid for both the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. "Vice Provost Phillips is committed to pursuing a purposeful, strategic, coordinated approach to the critical work of enrolling a talented, motivated and diverse class of undergraduates. He believes in our philosophy of holistically evaluating students and taking into consideration more than just scores and grades, but he also has a wealth of experience in analyzing information for trends and patterns relevant to admissions and financial aid. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) hosted its annual Dessert Reception and Project Showcase fundraiser this past Sunday evening. EWB professional partners, sponsors and interested professionals attended the event, which showcased the current EWB projects and featured presentations by executive members of EWB-USA.

A new pledge class joined Alpha Kappa Psi (AKP), the professional business fraternity, and Alpha Phi Omega (APO), the co-ed national service fraternity, after recruitment events this spring. AKP gained 18 new pledges from their spring rush events, while APO gained 30 new undergraduate members.

Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance (SHAG) Week kicked off with a make-it-yourself condom-gram and Valentine's Day card event at the Glass Pavilion on Monday. The newly created initiative is a week-long series of events and activities centered around raising awareness of safe sex practices in the Hopkins community.

Construction of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories and Biology Research Wing, an expansion to the Mudd Hall Biology complex, is well underway. The building will have energy efficient features, such as two heat wheels and rain gardens, and house both research and course laboratory facilities. Having started construction in June 2011, the building is slated for occupancy by summer of 2013.

Due to a mechanical system error, the fire suppression system in the Fresh Food Cafe was inadvertently activated last Friday afternoon. The clean up closed the FFC for the remainder of the day and students were redirected to Nolan's for dinner that evening.

The Office of Housing and Dining has revised its policy at the Fresh Food Cafe (FFC) to now allow students to bring backpacks into the dining area. The change comes in response to a string of thefts from the front vestibule area of the FFC over the past several weeks. The thefts included a backpack and a laptop.

Katherine Newman, James B. Knapp Dean of the Krieger School, hosted her weekly faculty-student dinner for members of the Physics department this past Tuesday evening. The faculty speaker for the evening was Marc Kamionkowski, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, who spoke on the topic of dark matter. The event was attended by over 30 undergraduates, graduates and faculty.

Coalition of Hopkins Activists for Israel (CHAI) and several other student groups co-hosted the "Shark and the Fish" event this past Tuesday evening to celebrate the recent release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by Hamas and to discuss Israeli human rights policies. The event included talks by two emissaries from Shinshinim, a program by the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency for Israel to educate communities abroad about Israel and Israeli culture, and an Israel-native Hopkins political science PhD student.

The Hopkins Muslim Association (MA) hosted its inaugural Muslim Unity Symposium this past Friday. The event showcased University of Pennsylvania research fellow Sadik Kassim who spoke on the origins of a number of major Shi'a and Sunni Madh'habs, Muslim schools of thought, and the substantial similarities among them.

President Ronald Daniels and Provost Lloyd Minor joined the Student Government Association (SGA) for its weekly meeting last Tuesday to review the SGA's projects for the upcoming year and to discuss collaborative efforts between the university officials and the SGA. In its second year, the fall semester dinner meeting with Daniels provided the SGA with an opportunity to update the president on their accomplishments from the previous year and projects for the upcoming year.

Hopkins's annual Fall Fest drew consistent crowds to its events this past weekend, despite inclement weather. Due to expected downpours this past Friday and Saturday, a number of events, including the Culture Block Party and the football tailgate, were cancelled and several outdoor events were relocated indoors. However, Fall Fest organizers reported that turnout this year was comparable to that of last year's, which did not face any inclement weather.

Levering Food Court received an overhaul this past summer, converting the previously darker atmosphere into a brighter, more well-lit open space.
