I’ve long maintained my love for the rock and metal genres, although admittedly I’m not very good at determining which songs fall into what category. Discerning genres is not my forte, so I often rely on Wikipedia and professional music reviewers to fill me in on what group plays what kind of music.

I’m back for my final fall semester here at Hopkins, and personally, I’d like it to be the best one yet. With that in mind, here are some of the songs that I’ve been using to keep my morale up. I hope you enjoy them too!

“Run Boy Run” by Woodkid: I just heard this song for the first time the other day, and it struck me as extremely cinematic. It has very dense, soaring music, but the words are simple and easy to understand. I automatically imagine a scene of someone running through a forest when I listen to it.

Right now we’re in the thick of the semester with midterms and papers that need to be wrapped up by the end of the month while still consistently attending classes and extracurriculars and handling various other mid-semester responsibilities.

In spite of the recent turn in the weather, spring break is nearly upon us, which should hopefully put most of us in a celebratory mood. If you still need to wallow in some remaining winter blues, however, I’ve created a playlist that’s a bit mellower than the last one.

While 70-degree days in February are actually really troubling (global warming, climate change etc.), that didn’t stop us from enjoying it. Campus was crawling with students emerging from their hibernation dens last week, and that was pretty awesome.

Besides, you don’t really need a special day or a special someone to enjoy some good love songs now, do you? Music is music so I hope you enjoy at least one of the songs on this week’s list. I hope you had a very happy Valentine’s Day!

School probably isn’t the only thing that might be getting people’s spirits down at the moment. With that, I wish you all the best semester yet, in spite of anything you may be up against. I hope you enjoy the first Playlist of the year!

Some of us might be heading home for the holidays, some of us might not be. Whatever our post-semester plans might be, it’s time for us to wind down and anticipate what will hopefully be at least a bit of a break. It’s also just about time to welcome a change of season — fall is rapidly turning into winter. It won’t officially be winter until the end of the exam period, but we’re already getting some of that crisp, wintry weather here in Baltimore and let’s face it, it’s the feeling that matters more than the official solstice.

If you’re like me, you’ve also been struggling with the changes wrought by daylight savings, namely the fact that the sun now goes down at 5 p.m. in the afternoon. All in all, I think it’s time for a playlist that will help us all get out some of our frustrations over, well, everything. Hopefully at least one or two of the following songs will help you deal with whatever you’ve got to deal with right now.

“Stressed Out” — Twenty One Pilots. This is probably the only Twenty One Pilots song you know if you don’t know Twenty One Pilots. It’s not the most positive song around, but it’s certainly relatable and probably a good choice if you feel like you need your music to commiserate with you about the stress you’re under.

“Girls Like Girls” — Hayley Kiyoko. This song is absolutely gorgeous and is about, as you can tell from the title, girls who love girls. It’s a positive song that celebrates women who are attracted to women and comes along with a beautiful music video that you all should watch. Aside from this song, Hayley has released a music video for her song “Cliff’s Edge” that features herself with a female love interest, and her recent EP Citrine includes fantastic songs about loving girls as well. The internet seems a bit confused as to whether Hayley is bisexual or lesbian, but she is certainly attracted to women and not afraid to show it!

I encourage everyone to listen to all of their music if you haven’t already — there are some absolute gems that I won’t mention here because I’ve chosen to limit myself. But without further ado....

1. “Fall” by Dotan: This first one is a new discovery of mine. Of course, I chose it because of the name, even though it’s not really referring to the season, but also because it’s got this really beautiful airy sound that somehow reminds me of a fall breeze. It’s not a slow song by any means either. If you’re going to check out only one song from this list, I’d suggest this one.

Some of these songs merely remind me of those times, others bear messages that I believe could be helpful to all new and returning students. Everyone’s music taste is unique, but I hope everyone can find something on here that speaks to them. Enjoy!

Heartburn. Acid reflux. Chances are you’ve experienced one or both of these in your life. I have experienced both frequently since quite an early age. I should note that these conditions do not always induce vomiting (in fact this is the first time I have ever thrown up from heartburn). Regardless, I know that it is not normal for children and teens to experience these types of digestive issues so frequently. (As I have alluded to previously, I am not ‘normal’ and this is one of the many reasons why I now eat the way I do.)

You’ve probably heard of mug cookies, cakes and muffins. It’s sort of a lifesaver for a college student. Baked goods that you can microwave? Ingenious. But the method of baking food in a mug is not only for sweet treats — there are healthy alternatives to the baked goods you crave that are just as simple to make! Today I’m going to show you the mug muffin recipe that my family uses. It originated from one of Cassey Ho’s recipes.

For those who don’t know, magnesium deficiency can cause problems with nerve function, blood sugar, energy and blood pressure among other things. It is linked to various health issues, including hormone imbalances, mental illnesses, type 2 diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and more. I won’t bore you with the reasons behind why my mom thought that I might benefit from some extra magnesium but I think it’s safe to say that this is something that could be of potential interest to anyone suffering from similar conditions.

Don’t get me wrong, Valentine’s Day means very little to me. But I remember a time, back in the day, when it did mean something. It meant seasonal sweets and a sugar high that lasted six hours. Ah, elementary school days. If you went to a school like mine, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was a day when everyone was everyone else’s Valentine, because nothing is better than free candy. To honor those glorious days, even though I no longer eat candy and haven’t for some time now, I have devised a commemorative list of Valentine’s Day junk food, complete with commentary.
