How conscious are people in a vegetative state? Although the answer may seem obvious, in actuality it isn’t. A recent study found that some patients who appear unconscious still have hidden brain network patterns that support a level of cognition. This indicates that even though the patients seem outwardly unresponsive, they may be aware of their surroundings and be capable of thought processing.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the U.S. is also facing an obesity epidemic: In 2012, more than one-third of adults were obese. However, a new study has found that restaurants have started voluntarily lowering the calorie count of their menus.

It’s now the age of the smartphone, and no one lets you forget it — not even the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met). Ranked one of the top 3 museums in the U.S. according to the 2014 TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards, the Met has just increased their popularity even further by releasing a new app for visitors.

Whether they’re athletes, cool European transfer students or that couple of kids who are actually from Maryland itself, we have such a diverse range of students here at Hopkins. We don’t always get the chance to live with or befriend people from the other side of the world, or even just from across the country, so it’s great that we can spend these four years here expanding our social circles and just meeting really cool people. What’s more amazing, though, is that even with all this variety present around us, there are always these certain few types of people that we are all bound to run into at least at one point of our college years.

If you think about it, resolutions make no sense. Practically speaking that is – since they almost never last. You always find yourself making all of these grand plans at the start of the year, only to pig out on the leftovers of that fantastic cake you had on New Year’s soon after.

Okay, let’s be honest – how many times have you scrolled through your Facebook timeline and seen pictures of your friends at awesome school events that you didn’t even know was a thing until then? One can never doubt the wonderful magical weekend that is Spring Fair, but unfortunately besides that we don’t really have other major school-wide events to look forward to during the year.
