The Hopkins women’s swim team took third place at the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship, accumulating 1245.5 points during the three-day event. The Lady Jays made the trip down to Charlotte, N.C. to compete against some of the better Division III schools in the region. Given the fierce competition, the Lady Jays performed incredibly well, setting numerous individual, team and school program records. Junior Ana Bogdanovski led the way for the Jays with three individual titles, earning herself a share of the record for most individual titles in one championship meet. Bogdanovski grabbed an impressive win in the 100m Free on the last night of the meet, to go along with victories in the 50m and 200m Free.

The Hopkins’ wrestling team traveled to Grantham, Pa. on Friday night to take on third-ranked Messiah in a non-conference wrestling match. While the Blue Jays fell at the hands of the undefeated Eagles by a score of 33-9, two Jays were able to come away from their matches victorious. Senior Duncan Crystal beat Greg Kabakjian, 4-2, in the 149-pound weight class, while freshman Jordan Forman was able to pin Jeremy Bailes in the 174-pound weight class. Forman’s pin brought the Blue Jays within 11 points of the Eagles, but three Messiah wins quickly followed Forman's excellent performance, putting the match out of reach for the Jays.

The eighth-ranked Blue Jays faced a familiar rival against George Washington Colonials in the opening match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship. Going into the match, the Blue Jays led the season series between the squads three games to one.

Hopkins basketball opened up the 2013-2014 season with an impressive win over Moravian, led by a 36-point effort from junior guard Jimmy Hammer.

The Hopkins men’s cross country team made history at McDaniel this past Saturday, winning its first Centennial Conference title in school history. The Jays, who won the meet with a total of 34 points, had five runners place in the top 10.

Hopkins knocked off Centennial Conference foe Bryn Mawr on Saturday, ending their five-game losing streak and getting them back to a .500 conference record of 4-4.

Hopkins sophomore goalie Erik Henrikson continued his impressive season last weekend at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament in Calif. Henrikson’s stellar performance in the tournament earned him the honor of Defensive Player of the Week, an award given by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Henrikson led the Blue Jays to a 3-1 record in the tournament, which included wins over first-ranked Redlands, third-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and eighth-ranked LaVerne.

Some late game heroics from Nittany Lion Mackenzie Cyr pushed sixth-ranked Penn State past the Blue Jays by a score of 15-14 on Sunday. In a back and forth nail-biter that kept the fans on the edge of their seats the whole way through, it was no surprise that the deciding goal came with just 31 seconds to go.

The Hopkins baseball team took down Swarthmore twice on Saturday by a combined score of 14-1, to improve to a record of 26-2 overall and 9-0 in Centennial Conference play. Junior Tyler Goldstein was lights out for the Jays in game one, striking out nine batters and walking zero in a complete game effort. After a relatively quiet first three innings, the Jays’ bats came to life in the top of the fourth, as seniors Ryan Zakszeski and Adam Weiner each drove in a run. Weiner came through again in the sixth inning, driving in senior Chris Wilhelm. Sophomore Craig Hoelzer followed up Weiner’s single with one of his own, scoring Zakszeski.

Freshman Dene’ DiMartino’s go ahead goal with just two minutes and 41 seconds remaining broke the Blue Jays’ 9-9 tie with Towson, improving Hopkins’s record to 6-2 on the season.

Senior Paul Marcello added another chapter to his storied Hopkins career, as he took home the 141 pound title at the NCAA East Regional Wrestling Championship at Gettysburg College last Saturday. Marcello’s first place finish clinched him his fourth straight NCAA championship appearance, making Marcello the first Blue Jay in history to accomplish the feat.
