Al Green wears aviator sunglasses, pinstripes and a pocket square tucked into his suit jacket on the cover of his latest album. And he is strutting. Like a cocky muthaf***er. "Cuz he knows. He knows that his latest album, produced by hitmaker Willie Mitchell, is about to seduce you with its sultry tunes.

I often find myself apologizing for my love of country music, and Dolly Parton is no exception. She is an especially difficult artist to convince people is worth listening to, let alone that she is not an alien life form.

As she made abundantly clear on her last album, released in 2001, the lovely Ms. Spears is no longer a girl, but now it's official: she has finally graduated to wanton woman. That two year hiatus had some naysayers thinking Britney had lost her chokehold as the Queen of Bubblegum. This release, however, pointedly titled "In the Zone", makes that claim irrelevant. Britney ain't interested in Bazooka Joe no more. She has moved on to more rugged Marlboro men, her cigarette of choice as of late. But for all that big-bad-girl maturity, this album is devoid of any real pop wisdom.

What exactly do you call the lifestyle so flamboyantly trumpeted by Baltimore-based Star & Garter magazine? Is it queer? Well, yeah, but not completely. Is it liberal? Absolutely. Is it deviant? That goes without saying!

One of the best parts about living in Baltimore is that finding a lot of the good stuff requires some hunting. It's not necessarily shouting in your face in blaring neon, but there's a lot of local color out there, and when you find it, the discovery makes it all the more thrilling.

Whether crossing the globe, living back in the home, or staying put for a sweltering Baltimore summer, Hopkins students spend their time off in wide and varying ways. Some work hard waiting tables to make money for college, some spend their glorious days of freedom soaking up rays on the beach with friends, some travel and others get summer internships. A select few manage a complex and intricate combination of all these things. But all good things, summer being one of them, must come to an end. I believe Adam Sandler said it best when he uttered the immortal words, "Back to school, back to school to prove to dad that I'm not a fool."

Ahh, Oct. 31. How I love the smell of face paint in the evening. The sight of whirling dervishes of dead brown leaves swirling in the wind under a big cloudy sky. The taste of the sugary traces of candy still left on my lips. The feel of cobblestones under my feet at Fell's Point. The smell of drunken strangers' breath in my face - demanding to know what my costume is. Okay, not so much the drunken strangers one. But it is an indisputable characteristic of Halloween in college and especially so in college in Baltimore where no holiday is complete without a drunken wino/ student getting in your face. Lord knows you can't go trick-or-treating in the ghetto. No amount of safe trick-or-treating precautions from the local police could ever make that a good idea. And of course Fell's Point, a distinctive Baltimore Halloween tradition, is the one and only place to go to see the local color and get that old community-feeling back.

Lista's restaurant is a lovely Mexican-themed eating establishment tucked away in Fell's Point at 1637 Thames St. It is hidden behind the storefronts that face onto Thames St. itself, but this only adds to its charm. Its off-the-beaten-path factor makes it even more thrilling to add it to your list of Baltimore discoveries, maximizes the service and minimizes the tourist contingent. This place is truly for people in the know.

Galvanize, a local vintage store located on The Avenue in Hampden, is owned by local cool-lady and savvy businesswoman, Joelle Kutsiukias. A native of Roland Park and a Hampden homeowner for 26 years, Joelle became involved in the vintage clothing business in1996 after a 24-year stint as a career-waitress. She began that first year with a small, rented corner in the storefront that she has since christened with the characteristically-edgy and funky name, "Galvanize." In 1998, she bought the whole store and today, has filled both its upstairs and downstairs levels chock-full of one-of-a-kind treasures. Her store is a hidden secret that many Hopkins students don't know about, a heaven for tag-sale junkies who enjoy the thrill of the hunt and a godsend for everyday customers who just need a show-stopping outfit for a theme party.
