On Tuesday night, Dean of the Krieger School Katherine S. Newman and Dean of the School of Education David W. Andrews led a conversation in Boston on the future of American cities as part of the University’s capital campaign, “Rising to the Challenge: The Campaign for Johns Hopkins.” The event focused on the University’s new Institute for the American City — one of President Ronald J. Daniels’ Signature Initiatives — and the role universities can play in redeveloping urban cities and schools.

Voice for Life (VFL), a Hopkins undergraduate pro-life advocacy organization, sparked campus-wide controversy on Tuesday and Wednesday with a demonstration on the north side of the Milton S. Eisenhower (MSE) Library that included a mock graveyard.

Last weekend, approximately 5,000 alumni and their families returned to Homewood for Alumni Weekend. A multitude of events were planned over the course of the weekend to bring together members of various graduated classes in an effort to evoke memories of their time at Hopkins.

Over 200 members of the Baltimore community gathered at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church on Tuesday to discuss plans for the St. Paul Development Site, known also as the Olmsted lot. Proposals for the future of the lot, located across from the Village Lofts on St. Paul, have recently set the stage for local debate due to concerns about the potential of harming local businesses.

Last December, 153 students graduated from Hopkins, a 50 percent increase in early graduates from the year before. Defined by the registrar as students who enrolled as undergraduates from high school and fulfilled their requirements in under eight semesters, early graduates tend to be seniors, but a single junior has graduated early at the end of the fall semester in each of the past three years.

Blue Jay Boxes, a new student-run business that has been selling chocolates in the Breezeway, has arrived on Homewood Campus just in time for Valentine’s Day. The company was started through Hopkins Student Enterprises (HSE), and specializes in care packages and cake deliveries, under the slogan “Making Homewood Feel Like Home.”

The Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) has released its lineup for the Spring 2013 season on February 1. The theme is “From the Front Line to the Bottom Line.” The annual spring symposium, a student-run speaker series featuring guests of global significance, is focused on encouraging analytical thinking within the school community by means of discussion about international issues including economics, equality and national security.

Last week, four juniors were selected to chair the 2013 Milton S. Eisenhower (MSE) Symposium, the University’s annual autumn lecture series. Aidan O.H.W. Christofferson, Francesca Pinelli, Elias Rosenblatt and Aaron Tessler have been elected to take the reins from previous chairs Chris Alvarez, Corey Rogoff and Eva Smith.

On Jan. 7, many faculty and students will return to Homewood after their winter breaks to partake in a Hopkins tradition that has been in existence for over forty years: Intersession. This voluntary program lasts for three weeks in January prior to the start of the Spring Semester.
