1. “Pilot” (1x01): With a double homicide, a throat slashing, a life-altering physical assault and a faked murder, Gotham doesn’t pull any punches in its first outing, setting up the bleak tone and pervasive violence that have come to define the show. A 12-year-old Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is set on the path to becoming Batman after watching helplessly as his parents are shot and killed. Meanwhile, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) tries to improve his status in the criminal underworld and pays for it dearly.

Obviously The Flash wasn’t going to just write off its lead, so I knew it was only a matter of time until Team Flash figured out how to get Barry back. But the premiere actually picks up a whole six months after his departure. Everyone has stepped up to fill the void he left behind, but no one more than Iris.

Most importantly, Arrow’s leading ladies have always supported one another. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for many Arrow fans, who quite harshly compare and rank the show’s female characters on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr.

Unlike creator Greg Berlanti’s recent work on The CW, most notably its Arrowverse programming block, the sophomore series does not feature any superheroes. However, Riverdale’s Betty does ardently display many characteristics of the heroes of Supergirl and Arrow as she helps lead her friends and family through the small town’s darkest hour.

1. Wonder Women: Gadot is the first actress to play Amazonian warrior and demigoddess Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, on the big screen, not counting Cobie Smulders' portrayal in 2014’s The Lego Movie. Gadot was first introduced as Wonder Woman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Previously, the iconic DC superhero had only been portrayed on television, most famously by Lynda Carter in the 1970s.

Barrowman played a gangster in the episode’s West Side Story-esque extended dream sequence rather than his Arrow character, the ruthless villain Malcolm Merlyn. In season one, Kara (Melissa Benoist) started as an assistant to the high-strung, demanding, witty and wonderfully saucy Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), CEO of CatCo Worldwide Media.

Imagine coming to the United States as a baby, the adopted child of American parents. You grow up as an American. You never visit your birth country. You don’t speak any language besides English. Now imagine you’re adult trying to do something as routine as applying for a passport. Your application gets rejected. Why? Because it turns out you are not an American citizen. You never have been.

Let me first say that I’m a fan of Supergirl. The show, which tells the story of 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, made history when it premiered in October 2015 as DC’s only female-led superhero TV show. It offers a refreshing portrait of female strength and vulnerability.

Over spring break my parents and I embarked on the ambitious project of watching as much of Marvel’s eight-movie X-Men franchise as possible in order to jump on the bandwagon and go see Logan, the ninth, critically acclaimed installment, in theaters. I was home in suburban Philadelphia, not Cancun. There wasn’t much else to do.
