While many Hopkins students enjoyed a restful week away from Homewood, the men’s and women’s tennis teams were hard at work hosting their Centennial Conference season openers this past Saturday against the Dickinson College Red Devils. Both teams walked away with a victory to start their season with a perfect 1-0 record in Conference play.

While many students sought warmth during spring break, the men’s and women’s swim teams looked to compete at their last meet of the year at the 2018 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Gritting through the four-day long competition, both teams displayed impressive performances throughout the week.

One week after their strong performances at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships (ECACs), the Hopkins men’s and women’s track and field teams sent 10 athletes to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the D-III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

This past weekend, the men’s tennis team traveled to Swarthmore, Pa. to take on the Generals of Washington and Lee University. The Blue Jays entered the matchup ranked 18th in the country and the Generals ranked 31st.

The women’s lacrosse team took care of business this past week with two strong showings on Homewood Field. The friendly confines of the home field proved to be too much for visiting programs, as the Jays were able to beat the Boston University Terriers 18-11 last Wednesday and the Hofstra University Pride 15-6 last Saturday afternoon.

On Nov. 5, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love suffered an unusual illness during a game against the Atlanta Hawks. During a timeout, Love rushed to the locker room seemingly out of nowhere and did not return.

In front of a crowd of over 5,000 people, the Blue Jays came up with the upset over the No. 6 Syracuse University Orange. Sophomore attacker Cole Williams led the Blue Jays with four goals and one assist in an 18-7 rout of Syracuse in New York’s Carrier Dome.

It was another weekend of ups and downs for the Blue Jays at Babb Field. Playing two games in two days, the Jays took on the Manhattanville College Valiants on Saturday and the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks on Sunday.

In recent months, discussions about video technology have come to the forefront in the soccer community. In 2016, we saw the first soccer competition use video assistant referee (VAR). VAR is made up of a team of three people, including at least one current or retired referee, that watches replays of important plays and decisions.

This past weekend, the Hopkins track and field team capitalized on their last opportunity of the season to qualify for the NCAAs. A total of 10 individuals will head down to Birmingham, Ala. this Friday to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Within the past couple of weeks, another scandal that the NCAA is all too familiar with reared its head again. A recent FBI investigation into the NCAA and its basketball coaches produced alleged evidence of Arizona University Wildcats coach Sean Miller discussing payment for star freshman forward DeAndre Ayton to land at the school.

This past weekend, the Hopkins baseball team took on Rutgers-Camden and Cortland State in the Baltimore Invitational. Despite a tough 11-2 loss to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, the Jays triumphed the following day against the No. 1 team in the country, the Cortland State Red Dragons.

Six years of progress came to a devastating end when the U.S. Men’s National Team lost 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago in the final qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup. The team only needed a draw, but their loss, coupled with Panama and Honduras winning their final games, meant that the U.S. will not be going to the World Cup in 2018.
