As Hopkins transitioned into remote learning in mid-March, so did its student organizations. Community-service based groups in particular have found creative ways to stay active even though many of their members are no longer living in the Baltimore communities which the groups serve.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences held an event on Tuesday celebrating the humanities at Hopkins, jointly conducted by faculty and students. The event, called Humanities in the HUT, delved into different research and creative writing opportunities offered at Hopkins, and concluded with a showing of student-made films.

This work, which revolves around five girls and their mothers who live in a small village in Bangalore, India, is her first piece of literary fiction.

The Student Government Association (SGA) debated a request from Students Against Private Police (SAPP) about promoting a student protest at their weekly meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Charles Commons. They also discussed a bill to fund Senior Week and an amendment to the SGA Health Accommodations bill.

The United States government shut down from Dec. 22, 2018 to Jan. 25, 2019. At 35 days, the shutdown was the longest in U.S. history and was the result of a standoff between President Donald Trump and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The conflict began because of Trump’s demand that Congress include a $5.7 billion budget for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in government funding legislation. Non-essential employees were furloughed, while all others were expected to work without pay.
