Students at the Peabody Institute were informed on March 27 that Peabody would be implementing an opt-out satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) grading policy for the spring semester. By contrast, the deans of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS) and the Whiting School of Engineering adopted a universal S/U grading system for Homewood Campus the same day.

The Hopkins chapter of J Street U co-hosted a discussion on U.S. President Donald Trump’s Israel/Palestine peace plan with Hopkins College Democrats (HopDems) on Wednesday night. J Street U is a grassroots organizing branch of J Street, an organization focused on achieving a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) proposed a rule on Sept. 23 which, if it passes, will prevent graduate students from being considered employees of their university. In October, Teachers and Researchers United (TRU), an unofficial Hopkins graduate student union, started a petition opposing the proposed rule.

Recently, the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI) announced a new financial module through which all allocation of funds will now be handled. In an email to student organization leaders on Oct. 22, SLI detailed several other changes to existing policies, including an organizational audit, new purchase request procedures as well as new trainings for student organization leaders.

Anne Porter, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto in the Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations Department, presented her findings from her former dig site in Syria as part of the Near Eastern Studies lecture series last Thursday, Oct. 24. She discussed her research on the site of Tell Banat, which held a complex of burial grounds both outside the settlement and within it.

Nonpartisan student organization IDEAL held its first discussion of the year in the Mattin Center on Wednesday night. The discussion centered on the topic of voter suppression. The moderators broke the discussion into three segments: gerrymandering, voter identification laws and the franchise.

Daniel Webster, professor of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, spoke on Tuesday about American gun violence at the Vigil for Victims of Gun Violence. The vigil was organized by JHU Amnesty International and held in the Bloomberg Center.

Dennis Halpin, the director of undergraduate studies for Virginia Tech’s history department, spoke about his new book A Brotherhood of Liberty: Black Reconstruction And Its Legacies in Baltimore, 1865-1920 at Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse on Thursday, Oct. 3. Joining him was Reverend Alvin Hathaway, Sr., the current minister of the historic Union Baptist Church in central Baltimore.

The Committee on Student Elections announced the results of the Student Government Association (SGA) Senior Class Senator Special Election and Freshman Class Council elections on Thursday, Sept. 26. According to SGA Executive President Aspen Williams, the Freshman Class Council elections saw a record number of candidates.
