The University announced the appointment of Branville Bard Jr., the current vice president of public safety, as chief of police of the Johns Hopkins Police Department (JHPD) in an email to University affiliates on April 20.

Following the announcement of the suspension of in-person classes on March 10, 2020, the University announced that students were required to leave campus by March 15, 2020, due to increasing worries around the spread of COVID-19. At first, the administration expected students to return to campus on April 12, 2020, but remote classes were soon extended to the end of the year. The following fall semester, the University moved courses to an entirely virtual modality.

Levering Hall is nestled between the Decker, Wyman and Keyser quads. In 1889, Eugene Levering, a successful Baltimore-born banker, philanthropist and trustee of the University, donated $20,000 for the establishment of a Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) on the University’s old downtown campus.

The South Asian Students at Hopkins (SASH), Bangladeshi American Student Association (BASA) and Pakistani Student Association (PSA) co-hosted a mela (Sanskrit for “fair”) to celebrate the cultures of South Asian students on March 11.

At its weekly general body meeting on Feb. 28, the Student Government Association (SGA) heard presentations about the University’s new Behavioral Health Crisis Support Team (BHCST) and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s upcoming climate survey. They also discussed the forthcoming Student Resources List as well as the Health, Safety and Sustainability (HSS) Committee’s recent Meat the Future Movie Night. SGA received funding requests for the Puerto Rican Student Association’s (PRSA) Roast Off event and the Menstrual Hygiene Gap event.

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its weekly general body meeting on Feb. 21 to rehearse a presentation several members will give to the Hopkins Board of Trustees on March 3. Director of Social Affairs sophomore Milton Diaz also provided updates on the status of the SGA website, which is in the process of being updated.

In light of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck parts of Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6, the Turkish Student Association (TSA) at Hopkins is raising money and collecting material goods to provide relief for victims. Currently, the death toll exceeds 40,000, and the estimated damages could exceed $20 billion.

The Hopkins Symphony Orchestra hosted “Canons Away! — A Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon,” an event designed to bring experienced and first-time Wikipedia editors together to expand the canon of historically underrepresented composers and performers. The event was held at the Arthur Friedheim Library at the Peabody Institute on Jan. 28.

Steven David is a tenured professor of International Relations at Hopkins. During his 40 years at the University, he has taught classes on nuclear weapons and political violence as well as on peace and war. He is currently writing two books, the first focused on Sino-American competition in developing countries and the second on threats to Israel's existence. In an interview with The News-Letter, David discussed his journey into academia, his current projects and advice for students.

The Hopkins Dining union, represented by UNITE HERE Local 7, held a forum for students and dining workers on their ongoing negotiations with the University in the Homewood Friends Meeting space on Nov. 9. The forum followed a picket line demonstration on Nov. 2 and a meeting with the University on Nov. 4, during which they failed to reach a consensus on job security.

The Program in Racism, Immigration, and Citizenship hosted a panel discussion titled “Living in Prison: Insights from the American Prison Writing Archive” on Oct. 6. The event discussed the research of three Hopkins undergraduates based on the American Prison Writing Archive, a digital collection of over 3,300 essays by incarcerated people.
