The results for the 2024–2025 Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board and class council elections were released on Wednesday, March 13. The Committee on Student Elections (CSE) reported that a total of 1,032 students voted, a number much lower than last year’s turnout of 1,453 students.

The University is mourning the loss of Ethan Posner, who passed away Friday, March 8 after a brief illness. He was a sophomore studying Biophysics at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and a member of Hopkins Hillel, the Jewish Students Association, Club Swimming, the German Club and the Undergraduate Brain Computer Interface Society.

Christine Wang is a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering and minoring in Space Science and Engineering. Outside of Hopkins, she has worked as an engineer in NASA’s Johnson Space Center since January 2023. In an interview with The News-Letter, Wang described her work at NASA, her experience as a Miss Maryland finalist and her professional fencing career.

One ticket and four independent candidates have joined the race for the 2024–2025 Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board elections. The SGA Executive Board debate will be held on Wednesday, March 6, and voting will be open from March 11–12.

Greta Maras is a Hopkins alum who graduated in December 2022. As an undergraduate, she majored in Political Science and International Studies and minored in German and Environmental Studies. She is currently working as the administrative specialist for the Office of the Public Defender (PDO) in Baltimore. In an interview with The News-Letter, Maras discussed her career aspirations to become a lawyer, research experience as a Woodrow Wilson fellow and passion for baking and running.

Between Milton S. Eisenhower Library and the Alumni Memorial Residence Halls, there is a large, two-story brick house that has stood there even before Hopkins existed: the Homewood Museum. The building had numerous lives before its current position as a museum.

The SNF Agora Institute held a community workshop titled “Promoting Inclusive Democracy Amidst Global and Local Challenges” on Feb. 6. The event featured Desirée Cormier Smith, the first Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice for the U.S. Department of State, and Hamse Warfa, a SNF Agora Visiting Fellow and Senior Advisor to the U.S. Department of State. Both speakers were appointed in 2022 and continue to work in the Biden administration.

On Monday, Nov. 13, Hopkins students celebrated World Kindness Day at the Breezeway with flowers and notes with positive affirmations. This is an annual event hosted by A Place To Talk (APTT) to spread kindness on campus during the stressful midterm season.

Harvey McGuinness is a student enrolled in the International Studies B.A./M.A. Program. He is currently a fourth-year undergraduate at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and a first-year graduate student at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In an interview with The News-Letter, he shared his passion for exploring the information ecosystem, the intersection between policy and mathematics, as well as his work in forming a disability training program in his home state, New Mexico.

Milton S. Eisenhower (MSE) Library is slated for a complete renovation beginning in summer 2024. As the University’s principal research library since 1964, MSE has only had minor updates over the years. The MSE Modernization Project, which will encompass the approximately 182,000-square-foot library, will have an estimated cost of $100 million and is expected to take two and a half years.

Last spring, Hopkins released details for its optional Pre-Orientation (Pre-O) program offerings as the Class of 2027 prepared to embark on their college journey. While most program choices were similar to prior years, the previously free programs now came with a cost of $250 (excepting those for scholar-selected students, which remained free). The outdoor Pre-O program, made up of multiple outdoor trips, was canceled altogether.

The Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute’s University debate initiative co-hosted the debate on the Supreme Court featuring Neal Katyal and Jeffrey Rosen on April 6. This was the fifth event in the 2023 Foreign Affairs Symposium series “Paradigm Shift.”
