Refuel Our Future, a student activist group calling for the University to divest from fossil fuels, staged a four-hour peaceful sit-in at Garland Hall last Friday, April 21. For the past six years, Refuel has been pressuring the University to stop investing parts of the endowment in fossil fuel companies.

The University placed Trent Bertrand, an adjunct professor in the Economics department, on paid leave Monday, Dec. 5, following complaints that he had created a “hostile environment” in the classroom. Bertrand, whose contract is renewed annually, has taught International Trade for the past six years.

Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the School of Medicine, James E. Page Jr. became the interim chief diversity officer and vice provost for the University, effective Aug. 27. This is a new position at the University, following the departure of Caroline Laguerre-Brown who served in the dual role of both vice provost for institutional equity and chief diversity officer. Page’s interim appointment will extend through the search process of finding a permanent replacement.

The University’s Office of Sustainability awarded the “Green Division of the Year Award” to the Homewood campus for the significant strides and progress in sustainability it has made in the past year. This award, along with 11 others, was presented at the fourth annual Green Blue Jay Awards ceremony at the Bloomberg School of Public Health last Friday, April 22.

The Student Government Association (SGA) discussed a bill for funding Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) seats at its weekly meeting on Tuesday in Charles Commons. Executive Treasurer Matthew Bee sponsored the bill, which proposed an allocation of $500 in support and sponsorship of SGA events in return for eight reserved seats at each event for SGA representatives.
