“It’s the end of the path I started us on.” Those are the words we hear Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) say to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in Avengers: Age of Ultron after Ultron and the Maximoff twins manage to defeat the team in their first encounter.

If you were anything like me in high school, then you were probably excited for the release of Marvel’s The Avengers. The Avengers debuted in 2012, just as we current college seniors were finishing up our sophomore year of high school. It was the first time we as an audience saw an ensemble movie full of superheroes that we’d been engaged with from as early as 2008, when Iron Man first released.

Joaquin Phoenix has somehow not become a mainstream name. What I mean by this is that your average movie-goer probably couldn’t pick him out from a collection of headshots. As one of the best actors of his generation, it’s truly a travesty that he hasn’t won an Oscar for any performance despite being nominated three times and winning a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for Walk the Line.

Since its premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) earlier this year, A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski, has been hyped by the press. Some even called it the Get Out of this year, but of course that’s an unfair comparison. The only real things the two films have in common are that they are two well-made horror-thriller projects directed by two well-known comedians.

If you’re a fan of political satire, the era we currently find ourselves in is probably one that makes you laugh — but also worry. From the headlines to the tweets, you can’t help but wonder if the meta-aspect of it all is lost amongst the very people involved in it. After the rise of House Of Cards, the idea that those in charge of the government were Machiavellian became prevalent, particularly in the U.S.

The ever-adored Wes Anderson premiered his new film, Isle of Dogs, last month at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, taking home the prize for Best Director. The buzz surrounding the film was that he had hit another home-run in the form of a stop motion picture focused on the love found in our relationships with dogs.

Over our spring break, Baltimore had the opportunity to host the R&B singer Miguel at the Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric as part of his War & Leisure tour.

Post-Oscar season has arrived and with that, more and more new movies are being released that are worth the time and price. This weekend saw the release of both Thoroughbreds and A Wrinkle In Time. The former features one of the last performances from Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away two years ago, which is why I opted to see this film first.

In 2009, a small film called Moon was released by Duncan Jones, the son of the famous David Bowie. It was Jones’ debut film and starred recent Oscar Winner Sam Rockwell as an astronaut on the moon in the near future.

In 2015, we were presented with Alex Garland’s directorial debut, the film Ex Machina, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander.

If you’re a fan of superhero movies, odds are you’ve noticed that the villains are often not particularly interesting or challenging to the hero’s way of thought. They are kinda just there to kick start the plot and be a punching bag.

My only New Year’s Resolution was to watch more documentaries. As much as I love movies — getting lost for two hours and escaping from the overwhelming feeling of panic that comes from the news — watching a documentary is something different.

In the midst of an exciting Super Bowl and the hype that comes with the commercials, fans were caught off guard by a trailer for a movie that nobody was expecting.

We’ve left another year behind. By the time you read this, we’ll know who has been nominated for the Oscars. Almost all of the films aren’t currently available in theaters, so for the general public it’s time to look ahead.

I’m going to start this off by saying that I have never watched The Room and I will never watch The Room. It’s not something that appealed to me in high school, and its prevalence among college students as a “cult classic” has only strengthened my feelings against it. This is the hill I will die on, and nothing will ever change that.

We live in an era were people of color are able to become more and more intertwined with relevant popular culture events. We have Ta-Nehisi Coates writing for the Black Panther comic book, Jordan Peele giving us the racial horror film Get Out and Guillermo Del Toro still serving us some nuanced — but still weird — characters in his productions.

In a year where we, as an audience, have been treated to some spectacular directorial debuts in the form of Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out and Tyler Sheridan’s thriller Wind River, it is only suitable that the next big name directorial debut is also an incredible work of art.

Almost everyone our age grew up with Saturday morning cartoons. You remember, don’t you? You’d wake up (relatively) early, get your bowl of cereal and sit down to watch an episode of Batman or Superman on Kids’ WB. It was the thing you’d look forward to after a long week of school.

Ever since Marvel Studios attached the post-credits scene of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury talking to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man at the end of Iron Man, fans have been treated to about 17 films, a few network TV shows and multiple mini-series on Netflix that have expanded the Avengers universe.

I did it for the fans. In a week when the biggest film being released was Jigsaw (because we need another Saw film) and when the film that I was looking forward to watching got critically panned (Suburbicon), I thought I’d have to watch Geostorm.
