For the majority of the 20th century, Hopkins was not the primary economic engine of Baltimore City. That title belonged to a massive steel mill whose workers were part of a strong union, operating out of Sparrows Point in southeast Baltimore — Bethlehem Steel’s Baltimore plant. Up until its decline in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the mill was the crown jewel of an industrial Baltimore, perfectly positioned in a major port and railroad hub in the middle of the eastern shore.

As they returned to campus this January, students working as leaders in the PILOT program were greeted with an email informing them that the program would be making cutbacks, including some leaders not being assigned a session for the semester. This is terrible news.

Enabled by the University-wide Gateway Science Initiative, the physics department has begun offering an Active Learning (AL) variant of General Physics I. It is now in its second year of operation. The course was developed in part through site visits to other universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and North Carolina State University. The class is heavily modeled on MIT’s Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) physics courses.

The Student Government Association (SGA) discussed its plans for student outreach, reviewed new student groups, reformed its What To Fix (WTF) Hopkins page, appointed new members to the Judiciary board and the Committee on Student Elections (CSE) and temporarily suspended sections of the SGA constitution while reviewing compliance with those sections.

On Thursday Oct. 16, a dedication ceremony for Malone Hall was held in an outdoor pavilion on Decker Quad. Dr. John C. Malone, who contributed $30 million to fund the construction of the building, was honored at the dedication.

Today it may seem like there’s a pill to treat everything. But is turning to medication always the best answer? A researcher at the Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) conducted a meta-analysis of studies from between 1988 to 2013 and found that individual Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is more effective at treating social anxiety disorder than any pharmacological or psychological treatment options. This analysis could help treat the 15 million people in the U.S. with social anxiety disorder.

The Committee on Student Elections (CSE) announced Friday that Anna Du will serve as the freshman class president for the Class of 2018. Alex Darwiche, Heidi Woll, Elise Rodrigues, Kwame Alston, Alberto Pepe Muniz and Sarah Zappone were elected to be class senators.

For over 15 years, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has developed technologies to assist in the study of public health in order to detect and prevent the spread of disease. These technologies are designed to be easily distributable and open source, meaning that anyone can look at their design.

A collection of student groups and professional offices known as the Healthy Jays hosted their Health Fest on Monday at the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center. The Healthy Jays consists of the Center for Health Education and Wellness (CHEW), Recreational Sports, Housing & Dining, the Meatless Monday campaign and Friday Night Films.

This past August, tinted window films were applied to the glass of the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center and the Glass Pavilion. Similar films were applied to the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) Wolfe Street Building in 2013. These films selectively filter the sun’s light, allowing visible light to pass unimpeded into the space, while reflecting and absorbing infrared light which would heat the interior of the buildings.

During their general body meeting on Tuesday, the SGA discussed several fall events, including a spirit week coinciding with the final home football game, a fall event modeled after Spring Fair’s beer garden and a “meet the candidates” event immediately preceding Freshman Class Council elections.
