Saturday is inching closer, and I know what you’re all thinking: It’s mother-loving EARTH DAY, my friends! (And yes, it also happens to be Homecoming, for those of you still proudly waving that school spirit. I salute you.)

This semester, I vowed to see more of Baltimore. I forgot that I also wanted to see more of D.C. Sure, I’ve done the museums and monuments; I’ve been there for interviews, conferences and field trips. But I haven’t spent much time exploring the D.C. lifestyle.

Last weekend found me trolling Hampden’s antique shops for a solid two hours on the mighty quest to find Hawaiian shirts worthy of the newest Mental Notes.

As senior spring zooms closer to its end, I find that the weekends slip through my fingers like sand. My friends and I have seemingly endless to-do lists of places we have to go before we graduate, and cramming them all in poses a fun challenge.

Food insecurity is a real threat for many families in Baltimore. But at the corner of Sisson Street and W. 28th Street just off I-83, sits a little-known warehouse of social action. It houses three great entities: Mill Valley General Store, a bulk-buyer’s paradise; Gather Baltimore, an organization providing affordable produce to residents; and The Baltimore Whiskey Company. We’re going to focus on the first two.

We live a mile away from one of the most festive blocks in America. Come December, the residents of 34th Street in Hampden step into their roles as holiday extraordinaires and plug in their twinkle lights. But we aren’t talking about some regular string of bulbs across the gutter: 34th Street turns into a holiday wonderland, with more lights than you’d see in a neighborhood, let alone a single block.

Thanksgiving break is fast approaching. With many students leaving the Thursday or Friday before, this weekend is likely your best shot at doing a “Friendsgiving” before everyone scatters to the winds. Here, we give you some suggestions on how to build the perfect Friendsgiving based on your personal #squadgoals.

“What I most want to do on the weekend is grab some time with a book in bed,” Professor Sarah Harrison Smith said.

It’s that happy time of year again: Leaves are turning colors, the air is growing crisp, everything is pumpkin spice flavored and you’re stuck in the library until well after dark. The calendar is filled with midterms, papers and presentations. And if you’re a senior, there’s a whole new level of stress brought on by job interviews and applications.

If you’re new to Hopkins, you’ve probably noticed that we don’t exactly have mountains anywhere nearby. Baltimore isn’t known as an outdoor mecca. But don’t fret: There are a multitude of great hiking spots in and around Baltimore. Look at a city map and you’ll see swaths of green spattered across good old Bmore and even more of it out on the edges. Just half an hour north of Homewood, Loch Raven Reservoir offers a perfect escape from the red brick and repetition of Charles Village.

It’s 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning, and no one looks more alive than the older gentleman strumming a guitar at the entry of the Waverly Farmer’s Market. He sits on an old milk crate, holding court next to Zeke’s Coffee with his circular spectacles glinting in the light.

I love weekends in Baltimore. I wake up full of excitement for a day chock full of “activities,” as I like to call them. Yes, I am an adult. When I wake up on Monday my wallet is a bit lighter and my Venmo account is way further in the red, but it’s always worth a few days of off-campus fun. Last weekend was a special one, as my boyfriend was visiting from out of town. Next time you have a friend coming to stay or a relative to entertain, check out these Baltimore must-dos.

Museums often get the Brussels sprouts treatment. They’re probably good for you, but you’re not going to go out of your way to try them unless your mom really makes you. But now that you’re in college, you’ve ventured out into the world yourself. Perhaps you’re ready to try once-gross things.
