A panel on Iran and al-Qaida drew a standing-room only crowd to Charles Commons on Wednesday evening. Political Science Professor Steven David was the moderator for the event, which was sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS), the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Executive Council and the Department of Military Science.

Nine undergraduate students spent this past spring break traveling through Austria on a trip entitled, “Celebrate Jewish Life in Vienna: Past, Present and Future,” which was sponsored by the Hopkins Hillel. From March 13 to 23, the students explored Jewish life past and present throughout the city, learning about the impacts of the Holocaust as well as what life is like for Jews in Austria today.

The University recently hosted a panel of experts to discuss issues related to the Center for a Livable Future. The conversation was based on an analysis published by the Pew Commission in 2008 on Industrial Farm Animal Production, which unveiled that the use of antibiotics with industrial livestock can cause serious human harm.

On Tuesday morning Robert Turning, Director of Student Activities, sent the entire undergraduate community an email revealing the results from the Smoking Ban Survey that went on throughout the SGA elections. The majority, at 52.7 percent and 1540 votes, felt that smoking should be banned on the Hopkins campus. About 37.7 percent of voters went against the ban with 1079 votes and another 241 votes, or 8.4 percent, abstained.

Glenn Bieler, Hopkins’s Vice-President of Communications, recently announced a new Identity Initiative, which aims to rebrand and unify the multiple schools under the larger branch of the University. Bieler’s presentation was posted to YouTube in order to publicize the goals and process of the Identity initiative.

Hopkins’s Global Blue Strategies, an advertising class that has transformed into a full-service marketing agency, was selected as one of 20 universities to partake in the Honda Civic Marketing Challenge. The class has been working to create an advertising campaign for the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan entitled Recreate a Classic.

The Hopkins Organization for Programming (The HOP) and Relay for Life held a bake-off in the Glass Pavilion last Thursday, March 7 in order to benefit Relay for Life, the national charity that acts in support of the American Cancer Society. Senior Jack Morgan and sophomore Rebecca Rabinowitz spearheaded the event.

Every year, 14 students from across the nation receive the Churchill Scholarship, allowing them to pursue graduate level studies in the sciences, mathematics and engineering with a full scholarship at the University of Cambridge. In January 2013, two seniors, Tiras Lin and Lay Kodama, were awarded the prestigious Churchill.

Recruitment for sororities at Hopkins began Sat., Feb. 2, kicking off a two-week period in which undergraduates interact with members of Hopkins’ 11 recognized fraternities, four recognized sororities and other Greek organizations with the hopes of gaining membership.

This Friday, Netflix will premiere David Fincher’s new miniseries, entitled House of Cards, which was filmed at Homewood this past summer. The miniseries follows a merciless congressman Frank Underwood, played by Oscar winner Kevin Spacey, as he fights his way up the ranks of the Washington political ladder.
