A Johns Hopkins University student was shot on the buttocks early Wednesday morning while she attended a series of parties on the 3200 block of St. Paul Street. The suspect, a heavy-set white male who lives on the block, allegedly brandished a pellet gun and shot the victim at approximately 1:25 a.m., Baltimore City Police said.

Class of 2004 President Simone Chen formally apologized to her class and the Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance (DSAGA) Tuesday for a comment she made in a Class of 2004 e-mail that some deemed insensitive. In the e-mail, sent earlier on Tuesday, Chen noted "Common myths concerning [the light blue] class t-shirts," and said that one misconception was "Light blue is gay," and that this was false because "Light blue is a very masculine color and is definitely 'in' this spring."

In response to an alleged street brawl between members of the Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternities, the Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) Judicial Board convened on March 14 and decided to put both fraternities on social probation, Associate Dean of Students Ralph Johnson and Coordinator of Greek Life Ira Young said. The University will also be doling out disciplinary actions against individuals involved in the incident, on a case by case basis, according to Associate Dean of Students Dorothy Sheppard.

President Bush officially announced his nomination of Dr. Elias Zerhouni to direct the National Institutes of Health (NIH) this past Tuesday in a ceremony held in the East Room of the White House. Zerhouni is currently the Executive Vice Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and now awaits confirmation from the Senate before he can fill the position.

University Pkwy. this past Monday, according to a neighbor and Baltimore City Police Public Affairs Section Officer Troy Harris. The incident occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. as the victim arrived home.

Johns Hopkins University Telecommunications repaired four emergency phones earlier this week and replaced another, according to Hopkins Security Lieutenant George Kibler. The phones that needed repairing were an elevator phone in Barton Hall and also the emergency phones located at Maryland Hall, Levering Hall and H-Lot. The Barn phone, located near the Krieger loading dock, at the foot of steps coming from the MSE Library, was replaced.

Two emergency phones on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus that were defective and unable to call Security have been partially repaired. The S-Lot phone, adjacent to Homewood Field, and the H-Lot phone, located next to the tennis courts between the Alumni Memorial Residences, now call Security with functioning sirens, but callers are still unable to hear communications from Security through the phones. Security can now hear everything a caller says through the two phones.

CNN legal analyst Greta van Susteren spoke last Sunday night in Shriver Hall as part of the 2001 MSE Symposium. The even was co-sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Van Susteren, like many speakers before her in the Symposium, discussed the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, but also focused a great deal on the 2000 Presidential Election.

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine faculty members Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, professor of psychiatry, and Dr. Geraldine Seydoux, associate professor of molecular biology and genetics were recently awarded MacArthur Fellowships by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Each award, know as "genius" awards grants $500,000 over five years.

Johns Hopkins University Security responded to this week's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warning of possible terrorist attacks by reemphasizing current heightened alert procedures and instructing staff to pay particular attention to all trucks on campus premises. The FBI alert, issued on Monday, warns of a credible threat that suggests possible terrorist attacks on the United States, home or abroad, over the next week.

Johns Hopkins University Security is currently operating with six vacancies, but those vacancies are accounted for by outside contracted officers, according to Director of Security Ronald Mullen. Hopkins Security also continues to carry a heightened supplement of officers due to the current national crisis.

A female Johns Hopkins University student was the victim of assault and indecent exposure while attending a party hosted by members of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (Fiji). The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. last Sunday, according to Hopkins Security, at 2933 N. Charles St. Security would not release the name of the victim.
