It wasn't so long ago that I remember flipping through various fashion magazines with my friends. We gawked at the ridiculous prices of haute couture, admired the latest collections from Paris and memorized the names of all the supermodels. Perhaps we did these things because we are girls and these are typical, girly things to do. More likely, we were already beginning to feel society's influence at the tender young ages of 12.

This fall marks philosophy Professor Hilary Bok's third year teaching at the Johns Hopkins University. While philosophy does not top the list of most popular majors at Hopkins, it definitely serves an important role within the University.

It's entirely plausible for Hopkins students, especially the inaugural freshman class, to feel dubious about the merits of exploring the inner workings of Baltimore. Our charm city is not exactly known as the most inviting of all college towns. After all, the new HBO drama, The Wire, which depicts the drug trade in America, isn't set in Baltimore for nothing.

Routinely lecturing to about 400 students in a single class every year can prove daunting to some professors. However, Professor Benjamin Ginsberg, the Bernstein Chair in Political Science and recipient of the 2000 George Owen Teaching Award, embraces the opportunity to teach Introduction to American Politics (IAP) every fall.

Think Hopkins' very own Spring Fair is the hottest affair in town? Many would argue that Philadelphia's PrideFest America rivals our Spring Fair as the center of wild and crazy fun to be had in the upcoming week.

Baltimore is scary enough as is. However, in an attempt to make the "Greatest City in America" even more frightening, Amy Lynwander and Missy Garland have created the Fells Point Ghost Walk. This attraction is aimed at helping tourists discover the rich sense of culture behind Baltimore's history.

So it's summer and that internship that you were hoping for didn't work out. Neither did that job back home. And that lucrative job baby-sitting for your next door neighbors - well, forget about it! But fear not, there really is a solution to the summer doldrums. Instead of spending the summer moaning about the lack of foresight on the parts of those inept managers who turned your application down (but don't worry, you'll show them one day), take this opportunity to turn your summer into a cultural experience that is fun at the same time.

"I'm sorry, but any subsequent scholarships that you win will take the place of your financial aid." Those magical words are what every high school senior hopes to be told; however, few ever hear that declaration from a college financial aid officer.

For many, college life means leaving behind all that they are familiar with. Gone are the friends you routinely spend time with, no longer will you see your parents every day. The city you live in may change and the accents will probably be different; you may even move to a different country and live amongst a new culture. With a decreased sense of stability in college, students often find that a pet is the perfect way to adjust to their new lives. A pet can be a source of comfort and may serve as a reminder of the Fluffy or Booboo you had back home.

There are some nuances in life that we all wish Mom would take care of on our behalves forever. Taking care of bank matters certainly tops that list.

Spring break is the wee- long period that every collegiate drools about. Luckily for us at Hopkins, this magical week will soon be upon us. While there is always the select group of students that can't exactly remember this time, but can "vaguely" recall that it was lots of fun, this week promises to provide adventure and a desperately needed respite from work for the Hopkins student body.

It must be a nice feeling to have everyone that you met in the first 17 years of your life call to congratulate you on being accepted to one of the nation's leading schools. Surely everyone one of you out there, as matriculated undergrads at, boy oh boy, Johns Hopkins University!, fielded several dozen such warm phone calls way back when as high school seniors. Oh no, you say? You mean that, save for your guidance counselor, no one even knew about the mere existence of Hopkins, let alone how to properly pronounce it? Sucks, doesn't it?
