Hopkins, as far as I can tell, is not a particularly cheery place. Despite the best efforts of student life groups to combat the dour presence with free hugs and pumpkin smashings, the source of this cultural campus malaise has deep-rooted seeds.

Netflix is everybody’s favorite recent pastime. It’s the easiest thing to do, requiring little-to-no effort and boasts a variety of high-quality programs that can entertain for hours. It’s incredibly easy to become addicted — it’s an insidious process really. You set out trying to procrastinate for half an hour, and four hours later you wind up in a bevy of confusion wondering what happened to your Monday night and, more broadly, what you are doing with your life.

It’s a typical Friday at Hopkins.

American Sniper, Clint Eastwood’s brazen portrayal of Navy Seal Chris Kyle, sent off 2014 with a divisive bang. The film sparked controversy throughout the nation, polarizing the affronted left against the proud right. The former held that the film offended their liberal sensibilities through glorifying violence and brutality in a war that they found to be inherently unjust; the latter remained prideful of the film, praising Kyle’s valor and prodigious skill as a marksman.

The media was abuzz this week as clips of Bill Maher, host of Real Time with Bill Maher, and actor/director Ben Affleck, from Argo among other films, participating in a heated debate over “Islamaphobia” circulated the web. The argument centered on the pertinent topic of how we, as Westerners, shape our perceptions of Islam and Islamic society.

While the summer often provides us with the biggest commercial hit movies of the year, the fall is when it really starts to get good. 2014 has been a less than memorable year in terms of movies thus far, and it probably isn’t a good sign for the industry when the real life news has been more suspenseful than anything in film. However, not all hope is lost; autumn often plays host to the greatest artistic achievements in film, and this year is shaping up to be no exception.

Let’s take a poll: if I were to ask you the last three movies that you saw in theaters this summer, could you provide an answer? Now, if I were to ask the last three shows that you’ve marathoned on Netflix in the past couple of months, would that be something a little easier to recall? If so, you’re not alone; the aggregate domestic box office total dropped nearly 15 percent between this summer and last summer.

Richard Linklater’s revolutionary epic ode to coming-of-age pushes the boundaries of all the conventions that we had come so used to associating with film. Films have traditionally served as an escape from the dreary bleakness of everyday life.

As most of us college students know by now, summer is a time of endless opportunities and plans formed around May that become less and less ambitious come August. At the beginning of the summer it feels like the possibilities are infinite. But as the summer grind comes along and everyone is occupied with things like internships, summer jobs and working at the carnival, it can be hard to carve out time for the things that you didn’t have the time or energy for during the school year. In order to make sure you get at least some of the things you want to do during the summer in, it’s important to start planning early.

A hot tidbit of gossip that everyone has been forwarding on their office computers in the past couple of weeks is the discovery of a porn star who is currently a freshman enrolled at a university. Not just any university, though; the 18-year old porn star in question attends Duke University, one of the nation’s most prestigious schools. A university like Duke is, ostensibly, supposed to represent values such as virtue and integrity, whereas the porn industry is often seen as the antithesis of these qualities. I guess one thing that both have in common is hard work.

The last few weeks have seen a whirlwind of activity in the entertainment sphere and most of it is related to news that indubitably makes the general public lose the little faith we had in the giants we call celebrities.

A slim silhouette appeared atop Kanye West’s behemoth onstage re-creation of the temple mount, as the instrumental to West’s iconic “Jesus Walks” began to hum in the background. Everyone in the audience knew what was coming next. The figure gingerly descending the mount turns out to be West’s version of Jesus, a reimagining similar to what anyone would think Jesus would look like: tall, thin, long dark willowy hair and an untrimmed beard. Yup, Kanye nailed it.
