This year’s Orientation Executive Staff organized new programming and activities to introduce students to Hopkins and Baltimore. While maintaining long-standing activities like the Interfaith Center’s Ice Cream Social and the hypnotism show sponsored by the Hopkins Organization for Programming (HOP), Orientation staff also revised existing practices to replace Peer Ambassadors (PAs) with First Year Mentors (FYMs).

Step Up week, the University’s effort to encourage students to give back to Hopkins both now and after graduation, kicked off on Sunday. The weeklong series of events is being coordinated by JHU Step Up, the student-run group that tries to draw attention on campus to the impact of institutional philanthropy by alumni, parents, students, and other members of the Hopkins community.

Last week, the Center for Health Education and Wellness (CHEW) and the Counseling Center co-sponsored a series of events for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW). Spanning from Feb. 23 to Mar. 1, the week included displays of positive messages around campus, do-it-yourself (DIY) projects and social media campaigns.

Earlier this month, over 100 students gathered in Hackerman Hall for the first ever Hopkins Robotics Club meeting. Surprised but excited by the large turnout, the club’s executive board members have already had to change their course of action.

After last year’s hectic fall semester canvassing and campaigning during the heat of the national election, the Hopkins College Democrats have begun this academic year with plans to politically engage the campus in new ways. While it is not a national election year, the College Democrats plan to keep up the canvassing, bring in speakers and collaborate with other groups on campus.

The Triple Helix, the undergraduate journal of science, society and law, hosted a panel event titled “Discussion on Innovations for Global Health” in the Charles Commons Ballroom on Monday. Professors from Hopkins and other universities used the event as a forum to speak about the challenges and breakthroughs in the interdisciplinary field of global health.

In an effort to raise awareness for homelessness, the Hopkins Helping the Homeless club hosted a Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau panel on Tuesday night at Nolan’s. A national organization, the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau featured speakers who had previously been or currently were homeless.

In honor of National Coming Out Day, Hopkins’s Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance (DSAGA) took to the Breezeway last Thursday to raise awareness about the day and the club’s mission. Decorating the Breezeway with a rainbow banner, blaring music, and giving out free candy and condoms, they sold T-Shirts bearing the messages “DSAGA” and “FCKH8,” in support of a national campaign to fight homophobia.
