The University appointed five new deans this summer, including Dean of Enrollment and Academic Services William Conley, Dean of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Jessica Einhorn, Dean of The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Martha N. Hill, Dean of University Libraries Winston Tabb and Dean of the Krieger Arts and Sciences Daniel Weiss.

The Johns Hopkins Office of Admissions admitted 3,129 students out of a total number of 8,963 applicants this year, aiming for an optimum class size of 1,045 students. With an admit rate of 35 percent, the accepted students have a 53 to 47 male to female ratio and an average combined SAT score of 1430, down 10 points from the 1440 average last year.

The Writing Center and the Expository Writing Program currently situated in the Owen House will move on April 7 to the Greenhouse Annex, located behind Gilman Hall next to the faculty lot, in order to make room for a new chemistry building on the original site. Chosen because of its close proximity to the English Department in Gilman, the Writing Center will resume its duties on April 8.

The Homewood Academic Computing (HAC) Lab in Krieger Hall recently underwent a few innovations during Intersession, most significant being the appearance of 50 Dell Optiplex GX240 computers. Generously donated by the Dell Computer Corporation, the black, fully-loaded computers are the most current, top-of-the-line Optiplex models equipped with flat screens, Pentium IVs and new drives.

Project Prevent held its first annual health care fair for the economically disadvantaged in the Anvil Facility Center of West Baltimore from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday by offering a variety of prevention screenings and medical services. Some of the organizations that offered services were the American Red Cross for program education, Brain Attack for stroke assessment and HERO for AIDS and STDs screening.

The nominees for Student Council's (StuCo) Executive Board became official last Thursday as qualified students turned in their petitions, each requiring 300 signatures, and attended the mandatory StuCo meeting.

Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity and the Johns Hopkins University hosted a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in conjunction with the American Red Cross Wednesday and Thursday in the Glass Pavilion of Levering Hall. Scheduled every couple of months or approximately every 56 days, both students and members of the community can donate by scheduling appointments or by walking-in.

Online registration for spring semester classes began for seniors this Monday for the first time, implementing the initial idea and prototype created in 1995. Both administrators and students hoped that the new system would create more freedom while decreasing the time spent in long lines.

The JHU Muslim Association (JHUMA) is currently hosting its annual Islam Awareness Week for students to broaden their understanding of Islam and to promote knowledge of the student interfaith group. The events scheduled for Monday through Saturday of this week included a series of lectures, a documentary showing and a closing banquet.

Police arrested a man last Saturday for trespassing in Ames Hall with two screwdrivers and a knife. During the night, the suspect tried to gain access to room 22, which was occupied at that time by a member of the Psychology department.

After the remodeling of Terrace Court last year, students have commented on how much better the food is or how much better the cafeteria looks. It's true, the food is better and the atmosphere seems to be nicer - at least much better than public high school standards. Yet, improvements can be made - most students will agree with me on that.

The University Mini-Mart, located on 3230 St. Paul St., began to accept J-CASH Monday in response to strong student demand and increased knowledge of the J-CASH/Student Advantage Program. In addition, the mini-mart expressed hopes that accepting J-CASH will provide more student interest and convenience as well as increased sales for the store.

Smoke originating from a burning Styrofoam cup forced the evacuation of Building A around 2:30 a.m. last Friday. Students who noticed the smoke woke others in the building and notified their Residential Advisor, who then pulled a fire alarm.

For the first time in its history, the MSE Symposium is hosting a free photography exhibit entitled "Headlines: Politics and the Press." It is on display until Oct. 26 on the first and second floors in the Ross Jones Building of the Mattin Center. Presented by The Baltimore Sun, the public exhibit, as a part of the Symposium's "A Nation United: Politics and Power in the 21st Century," emphasizes the influencing power of the media over historic events and the emotional reactions of Americans throughout time.
