All of the exciting features and applications found on phones have turned our mobile devices into another limb we all unconsciously use and look at when we’re bored. So, when my cell phone stopped charging, it messed up my routine.

In high school, which feels like way too long ago, senior year is heavily influenced by the beautifully dangerous senioritis. From what little I can remember, I barely did anything outside of the college application process. But at Hopkins, I can’t afford to let that happen again. Amidst the milestones of having purchased something from the Levering Café for the thousandth time, eaten my 100th beef patty from Brody and lost my balance on the breezeway, I also turned 21.

My youngest niece, Alejandra, recently turned 4 years old, and since I chose to go to college in a different state and my weekends are far from open, I was not able to attend the festivities. My sister first notified me of the plan to host Alejandra’s birthday at Bounce U, a big bouncy spot in the Bronx, a good 2 months ago in the worst way possible... a text.

Before coming to college, I never placed any real value in having keys, because for all intents and purposes, I never needed them. My dad drove my mother, brother and me to school and work and back home everyday, so I never needed the house keys. Then I never needed any of the car keys because I only got so far as getting my permit, and that’s about to expire on my 21st birthday in a few weeks. And finally, I didn’t need keys to my grandparents’ house because by the time I left school, it was late enough that they would be home.

The other day, on one of many trips that I will be sure to take to Giant during this semester, my brother texted me.

The last summer of my undergraduate career was colorful, but the brightest memory was my family trip to Florida.

This past week was spring break for a lot of high schoolers, including my little brother Johnny. The last thing I thought he would have wanted to do was to come and stay with me for a few days, but—alas—when I asked him he said he wanted to come down. This was surprising since my whole family is composed of homebodies, with my sister being the only pata caliente (literally, “hot foot,” or someone who just has to move around or travel). Apart from spending time with him, I really wanted him to get a taste of what college will be like, especially since he is graduating high school next month and will be going to college in the fall.

Have you ever called someone and when they picked up they said they were just thinking or talking about you? It is believed that if this happens to you then you will live a very long life.

The first bite of crispy bacon. A cold shower in the middle of summer. An old song that you loved when you were younger suddenly playing on the radio. These feelings pretty much embody what spring break was for me.

Every day, I make it a point to have one great or good thing happen. I feel that it is important to have a daily highlight because otherwise all of the days start meshing into one another, and then you can’t remember the last time you washed your hair. That is unacceptable.

Even before there were throwback Thursdays on Instagram, looking through old photo albums was always something my family and I ended up doing whenever there was a lull in activity. We must have at least 10 varying sizes of photo albums stacked in the kitchen closet. Every time we flip through the pages full of pictures of when we were all young, my mom and dad recount the stories that went along with a select few.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, mainly because it is the one holiday during which I know that my family will be cooking a feast and we will all sit around and gossip about any and everything. Every year, it reminds me that I should be thankful everyday for the people I have in my life, especially for my truly amazing parents.

If someone asked you what was the most commonly said word or phrase around your house, what would it be? For me, it would be “¡Cálmate!,”which means to calm down. In my house, all ends of the emotional spectrum on touched on a daily basis, but the one that never seems to have had enough time in the spotlight would be excitement. It’s not that amazing events don’t occur frequently in my family, it’s just that we all get so excited for anything.

Half of the semester has already come and gone, so this is the time to remind ourselves that we must TREAT OURSELVES.

If you’re a freshman at Hopkins you must be feeling good right now. The fact that you have been accepted to one of the most respected universities in the country is a confirmation that you were a dedicated, hard-working student throughout high school. Along with the disbelief and excitement of coming to Hopkins inevitably comes the nerves. In order to calm them some people may emphasize the fact that during your first semester as a freshman your grades will be covered. But DO NOT be fooled; covered grades are a blanket of false security!

Growing up in my household meant being repeatedly reminded to dress up. My mother had my older sister a whole nine nine years before I came along, and she was desperately hoping for another shot at having a girly girl. My sister was the tomboy rocking the Tims and polos, and the only time my mom won out was when she forced her to wear a dress once a week … in middle school. After that, it was a lost cause. Of course, nowadays it’s a completely different story. The newly christened 29-year-old rocks Louis and high heels anytime she isn’t rocking her court officer uniform.

Spring break has taken on a whole new meaning. It used to be seen as that one week where everyone would travel to a hot climate and show off their spring-ready bodies in next to nothing. Now, as I scroll down my newsfeed on Facebook, all I see are photographs from unconventional Spring Break destinations, spanning from cold Canada to just-as-cold Michigan.

It’s already March 2013. I repeat, March of the year 2013, and it feels like it was still yesterday that I was roaming around my Brooklyn apartment with a big baby doll in my arms. At that point, my older sister was trying to wean me into wearing pants, and when I say wean, I mean that she would yell that I needed to put pants on. Pants? I had panties on, wasn’t that enough? Remember when that was acceptable? As a matter of fact, let’s rewind to when full on nudity was the norm ...

Whether it be “that girl has crazy nice hair” or “that boy is acting crazy,” people throw around the word “crazy” in a wide range of situations; its meaning constantly varying based on the context. Growing up in my family, this word was used more often than any other -which definitely says something. The word was mostly said about or directed towards a significant other. The couples guiltiest of this usage were my parents and my grandparents.

Everyone at one point or another has completely missed something that was right in front of their face. I’m talking about things like looking past a friend when walking around. This happens fairly frequently to me since I have a severe daydreaming tendency, but it had never been to the point where I didn’t notice things on people’s faces until the other day.
