I love an angsty musical. There is nothing more entertaining to me than actors breaking into fully choreographed show tunes in the middle of dramatic, emotional scenes. The more pirouettes and tap dance numbers, the better. Nothing says emotional carnage like jazz hands. I blame watching High School Musical 2 at a young and impressionable age.

I admit, I’m a simple being. It takes relatively little to make me happy: warm socks straight from the dryer, cookies fresh from the oven, no homework or impending midterms to stress about and — dragon movies. I will watch any movie with a dragon in it. The Hobbit? Bring it on. How to Train Your Dragon? Of course. Shrek? A classic.

The sense of anticipation and buildup for Dune: Part Two ahead of its release to theaters was intense. Based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune, the film debuted on March 1 with a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.9 on IMDb. Comparisons were made to acclaimed franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. One early review I read was so overwhelmed that it simply stated, “CINEMA!!!!!!”

I’ve only done improvisation once in my life. It was not voluntary. One of my English classes in high school required it to help us “loosen up” and get into character before we performed scenes from the Shakespeare play we were reading. I have never had a more humbling experience in my life, but I learned the basic mantra of improv: “Yes, and...”

Can you ever be too lucky? Is there such a thing as having too much luck? Before reading the novel With a Little Luck by Marissa Meyer, I probably would have answered “no.” Why wouldn’t you want to wake up on the right side of the bed every morning? Why wouldn’t you want to avoid stepping in a mound of dog poop on the sidewalk or splattering tomato sauce on a white shirt? Why wouldn’t you want to always be lucky?

Some words of advice before you start watching Upgraded: Do not watch it in a public setting. Not because it’s explicit or graphic or any of those reasons you might be thinking — shame, shame — but because it’s surprisingly funny. I may or may not have started watching it in a study lounge and had to remove myself because I was laughing so loudly in the opening 10 minutes.

There are some books, movies and shows that instantly bring me back to my childhood. Anything from the Harry Potter series to The Hunger Games to Spy Kids instantly triggers a wave of nostalgia that whisks me back to the 2000s and 2010s. But one of my favorite series, if not my favorite, was Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians.

When I saw that a new Kevin Hart movie had been released on Netflix on Jan. 21, I knew I had to watch it. Not because I expected anything new or original, or because I expected great acting and cinematography, but because I expected the usual Kevin Hart fare: a feel-good action movie heavily peppered with physical comedy and height jokes.

When I first heard that the film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was going to be released, I was less than enthusiastic. To me, it seemed like a product of Hollywood’s latest trend of releasing seemingly endless strings of reboots and spin-offs of already successful hits. Was my inner side-braid-wearing, archery-obsessed self from 2012 secretly thrilled at the prospect of a new Hunger Games movie? Admittedly, yes. But I also didn’t want The Hunger Games to become the latest franchise to be recycled, repackaged and presented as new.

What is a superhero? I think, for most of us, what instantly comes to mind is a caped crusader in brightly colored spandex. This costumed person uses their superpowers, which vary from flight to invisibility to X-ray vision, to fight bad guys. They do what’s right. They’re moral. They protect their city or their world from the stuff the average person can’t.

I’m so upset. Not because The Other Zoey, one of 2023’s most recent romantic comedies, didn’t live up to my expectations. It did. It was sweet, it was sappy, it was cliché and it stretched the boundaries of reality as is befitting the rom-com genre. It’s also been a minute since a good romantic comedy has been released, and The Other Zoey managed to get an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, so it’s a solid film.

Rap artist Rick Ross and pop rock band COIN performed in this year’s Hoptoberfest concert on Oct. 14. To be honest, ahead of this concert, I had never heard of either Rick Ross or COIN. Their most well-known tracks, “Talk Too Much” by COIN and “Hustlin’” by Rick Ross, were vaguely familiar to me, but not to the extent that I could sing along or shout the lyrics at a concert. However, I figured that a free concert was a free concert, so I went.

Juggling classes and exams in college while also maintaining a social life and good mental health can be challenging (I’m honestly exhausted thinking and writing about it). Because of this, JHU ¡Baila!, the University’s only Latin dance team, really stands out for how it embraces the importance of this balance. They offer a welcoming space for Hopkins students to feel connected to each other, their Latin roots and the world of Latin dance.

I’m not usually much of a horror fan. The tiger cave in Aladdin still freaks me out, and after the horror unit in my eighth-grade film class, I had nightmares for weeks. And these were middle school horror projects we were watching, so, as you can probably guess, my tolerance for anything scary is horribly low.

On Friday, Sept. 8, Olivia Rodrigo released her long-anticipated sophomore album, GUTS, and it did not disappoint. Her debut album, SOUR, which was released in May 2021, mostly explored the trauma associated with a toxic breakup. It’s heartbreaking and depressing and I love it, but it’s mostly about a dysfunctional teenage relationship, and I was looking forward to seeing her growth on her new album.

Every year the various performing arts groups at Hopkins get together to promote their work and attract new members. This past weekend was as energetic a series of shows as we have seen in some time, as the student arts groups have fully regained their momentum. A cappella groups are as refined and plentiful as ever, the dance groups continue to bring their electric energy and the theater groups have provided a spark of laughter and emotional reprieve for stressed-out students.

For the most part, I’m a huge fan of superhero films. Their predictability is my comfort cinema; I love their simplicity and determination for obvious good to prevail over evil. I love their surprisingly inspirational training montages. I even love that all the protagonists have cheesy superhero names (seriously, though, why are there so many names that end with “Man”?).

I don’t know much about comedy. To be honest, I don’t have a very sophisticated sense of humor. Don’t get me wrong — I like sophisticated, witty humor. It’s a great moment when someone comes around to the end of the joke and it feels like a full circle moment. You can tell someone really thought out the joke when it almost feels like they laid out an introduction, arguments and a conclusion, making you feel like a smarter person for just having listened to them.

I have never felt more intensely attached to a character than when I watched The Mandalorian for the first time. Not attached to the Mandalorian, the titular character and intended central protagonist played by Pedro Pascal. Not to any villain, comedic side character or even a character with intelligible lines. No, it was to the real star of the show: Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda.

Is there any movie franchise bigger than the Marvel franchise? After a quick Google search, I received my answer: a resounding no. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has, according to CNBC, grossed over 22 billion dollars at the global box office. For reference, the second-highest-grossing franchise, Star Wars, only grossed 10.2 billion, and it started roughly 30 years before Iron Man was released in 2008.
