Current Issue:

Go nuts to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, cancer risk

Abstract:
I love nuts. Cashews are the best (especially the honey-roasted variety), and then come peanut M&Ms and then almonds. Of course, I clearly don't love the nuts alone - I like them processed and salted and coated and calorie-infested, but I justify this by saying that regardless of what you add to the nut, you haven't subtracted from its nutritional value, you've just added a bit to the cavity crusters....

I think you are one to something! I have taken blood pressure medicine for about 30 years(I am 57) and have used about every type of medicine there is but it still would hover at 140/90.

Never, having been a big nut eater of any kind(ok, peanut M&M's as kid) but not as an adult. Recently, I started buying South Beach prepped meals and one of the recommendations was eating nuts as a snack to help with the fat and salt cravings. Never, one to touch a naked peanut, I started buying Planter's Deluxe Mix and eating a hand full when craving salt(Spicy V8 also helps with this) and at last my internist check up it was 112/80.

I have tried to figure out what has changed. Same Quinaretic(sp?)dosage as last year. Still as fat at 230 on a 6' 1" frame. I have pretty much stopped with SB food(I am addicted to Scramblers egg and bacon for almost all meals) but I have continued the nuts.

So, while not very scientific, I am beginning to believe it is the nuts, maybe I was starved for magnesium.

I would like to know what has changed so I can keep doing it!

Thanks for keeping us informed, I love nuts too, I like them a lot and I would eat nuts at any time of the day if I wouldn't be worried about my weight at some point. I am glad to hear nuts are great for health, it's like keeping a diet with foods you like to eat.

I didn't know cashews were so good for blood pressure. I'll have to buy more. They're pretty tasty anyway.

I wonder if eating White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies is also good for your blood pressure as well.
