Abstract:
Historically, mood disorders have been blamed upon evil spirits, possession and witchcraft. More modern investigations have looked at environmental causes and childhood experiences. However, more and more evidence shows that genetics play an important role in these disorders, including bipolar disorder....

My grandsons were diagnosed with ADHD at a young age and were prescribed the drug Ritlin. When the oldest one, Jared, was in his teens, he tried to commit suicide and he was diagnosed as bi-polar and given many different drugs. He is now 31 and is taking four medications for bi-polar and three medications to stave off the drug effects of the four. He is an intelligent, sensitive, young man, whose life is almost at a standstill. He is on disability and doesn't work. The drugs have given him an enormous appetite and he has gained weight he never had before, plus some unusual sleep patterns.
His childhood environment was not what it should have been. The family adopted a baby daughter from Guatamala when the boys were 12 and 14 I believe. Their mother was very overweight and did not have good self esteem. Their father, my son, was a main frame consultant and traveled most of their lives. Jared, being the eldest child, practically raised the adopted daughter, was mistreated by his mother at a young age, and more or less left out of many activities because of his younger brother,Jason. Jason did not take the Ritlin if he could help it and went into acting and some sports to take care of his manic moments. Today he is in the Navy learning Chinese.
I believe the gene discovery is one of the miracles for the future whereby
these intelligent active "manic and depressed bi-polar" labels can and will be overcome entirely.
Thank you for your interest and desire to find a cure for this unfortunate emotional disturbance. Keep up the good work. I would like to be kept apprised of your progress and the cure you will eventually discover for "bi-polar".

I have found that i have a gene mutation mthfr that I cannot metabolize folic acid which can lead to bi polar symptoms for the last twelve years I have been on all types of medications out there none that ever helped me I finally found a doctor who truly cared to find the reason behind my symptoms. I am almost completly off my medication now and besides the withdrawls I am mentally doing fine. I would encourage anyone who has been diagnosed with this to have this testing.

Hopefully more awareness will be raised from articles like this one. I hate seeing people get messed up from prescription drugs.
