Abstract:
Legalizing gay marriage is about civil rights, and if we as Americans are to say that our country stands for equality and justice, then it must be done....
I have been working hard and donating dollars to the "Vote NO on 1" campaign in Maine. I have a web crawler that provides me with links to News stories on the issue. I happened to receive one from Fox News. The article was not particularly offensive. However, the comments from their viewers were not to be believed.
The Maine law simply removes the requirement of "one man and one woman" and replaces it with "two people" (or something similar). From this change, apparently, the end of the world as we know it will occur.
Never have I read comments using so many gay epithets. The only arguments provided against same-sex marriage were endless references to the bible (apparently the only TRUE religion), fear that children might actually be aware of what is going on in current events, and downright call-it-what-it-is hatred. The hatred part was quite specific including terms such as "disgusting, vile, filthy habits" and that gays had a mental illness.
It is pointless to provide facts to these people. They do not wish to hear them.
In an article and a forum such as this, one might get the occasional negative comment, but to get a real view of what the opposition says and how they feel, you need to check their websites. It is utterly appalling. You would think you were listening to the Grand Wizard of the KKK.
I do not know what has happened in the last 40 years since the '60's and '70's since I grew up, but I have seen a decidedly sharp turn toward ultra-conservative, almost Taliban-like attitudes towards others.
Perhaps, with a tough economy, people circle the wagons and lash out at change of any kind? I do not know, but it is not a pretty sight.
I am optimistic about Tuesday being successful, but I am concerned about a backlash. Hopefully, their bark is worse than their bite.
