Current Issue:

Adderall expedites your studies, but not without harm

Abstract:
I lead a busy life. I'm a college student. I read a lot, write a lot and do a lot of homework. I stress about accidentally tripping onto the Gilman seal before graduation. I worry that my ceiling is going to collapse on me thanks to my sexually ambitious neighbors....

I have been talking Adderall/ridilan since I was very very young. I take it now. And I can tell you, stopping the dosage does not result in withdrawal. I have stopped taking it many many times, and not taken it for months at a time. the longest was 6 years when I stopped taking it and joined the Marines. Going off meds does not make you less effective, you simply revert to your normal state. But thats just my experience speaking.

I can see how it could be addicting in a nicotine sort of way. I've been taking Adderall for four years and for various reasons may be off them for a week or so at a time. There are very mild cravings but I would more relate them to wanting to be what you can be. I do not advocate "vacations" from the drug very often. For example on the weekends or when out of school. Because you do suffer from a drop in energy and can feel lacadaizical(sp?). I suggest cutting you intake to 50% or even 25%. The effects are greatly minimized doing this.

Adderall can help, but careful. I'm the unfortunate combination of ADD and addiction-prone and when my insurance stopped paying for the more-expensive drug I was taking for it (provigil) I switched to the more affordable Adderall. Things were fine for a while, but tolerance built quickly and more and more and blah blah....anyway, two months later I was losing my hair, regularly staying up for 4-5 days, and afraid to leave my house. Obviously I was taking more than the recommended daily amount, and when I quit I had pretty bad psychological withdrawal (depression, lethargy), lost all interest in everything I was studying, and now if I can spend more than 15 minutes a day studying it's an accomplishment.

I'm not saying nobody should take Adderall. Used properly it's a miracle drug. But when you get to the point where it just isn't working anymore, switch to something else or quit. Don't start taking more. And use XR if possible--it doesn't have the euphoric effect IR does.

Aderall has proven itself to me as one of the most dangerous prescription drugs out there right now. It is just like meth. It can cause hallucinations through lack of sleep. Heart palpitations can also occur after extended use.
