Abstract:
On the surface, this has become a war between the White House and Fox News. At a deeper level, it is really about how strong the mainstream media has grown....

You are absolutely correct that every news corporation has the right to present its journalism, biased or not. The question the White House has raised, "Is Fox really a news corporation?", is what seems to be missing from this debate. If one of the publications that grace the racks of the supermarkets makes a false claim or inflammatory remark about someone, nobody really pays attention, because those media outlets do not pretend to be serious news, and most people do not take them seriously. Fox, on the other hand, presents "news" in a similarly misleading manner to its viewers while claiming to be a serious news organization. The Obama administration's mistake is going after Fox, which is akin to punching the annoying kid from first grade who is always calling you names. All it does is make everyone sympathize with the annoying kid and make you look like a bully. The real shame in all this is the way the mainstream media has allowed a media outlet like Fox to stand in their midst as a "sister organization". They may have the same first amendment rights as the NY Times, but to defend them as news journalists is like the NY Times defending that "grocery store magazine" as a news organization. Why isn't any serious news media calling Fox on the carpet for their reporting? Just once, I would like to see an investigative report on how Fox reports the news. It is surprising and sad that a comedian like Jon Stewart speaks more truth about politics and the state of our country on his 1/2 hour comedy show than any news paper or new broadcast in this country.
